Images
Web Design June 28th, 2007What I’ve noticed is that the longer I’ve been designing, the harder it is to find images for layouts. Over half of my new-layout-for-SF time is just finding an image to work with. I become a fanatic about it: obsessing over not being able to find anything to work.
I’d use my own pics but I only really take pictures of scenery (I don’t have any friends that would pose for me and stuffage; well, Effie would but she is 5 hours away). I’d use images of Emmy but the ones I have either don’t work or are too small. Kairi is too small yet.
So my only other option is to draw something for it. Aelyn is always telling me to use my drawings. And despite what everyone thought, the “Time of Faerie” version (also known as “the purple one”) was not drawn by me. That was Brian Froud, people.
But my drawings don’t work. They are little square or rectangular things that are so realistically heavily shaded that they wouldn’t blend into anything. So I’d have to box them up but that’s not my style. I actually spent the last two hours drawing something for a layout, keeping in mind not to shade as much. It came out cool but did it work? No. My scanner scanned it weird because it is in my sketchbook and it just didn’t work out. I love it on paper but that didn’t transmit well in the scan.
So, where am I? Back where I started again: searching for images and coming up with zip.
But that leads me to something else. I think that as you grow as a designer, you use up all of your image choices that will work for you. As you grow, you become more picky with what images you will use. So your scope gets smaller. And then all the amazing images that would work perfect but the artist’s don’t want them used. *sigh*
Maybe that is why so many of the older designers have image-less layouts. Forget what they say about accessibility; that’s just the excuse for lack of image choices.

Ha! Been having the same problem lately. I also want to change my layout since, as of now, I’m not really proud of my current layout. I’ve been thinking of putting one of the best pictures of myself in the header with the whole “Extraordinary” theme. Haha… I wanna be extraordinary (some kind of perspective). So there. Sorry, if I just came to drop by just now. Been so busy with college. I’ll give a respond to your post in Skyefairy later. ^,^
PS: Don’t be like that, of course, we love you! Especially me… Haha *hugs Skye*

Excuse for lack of image choices indeed!
Browsing through your designs, I find that that they have a dominating header. Maybe you could move towards a different kind of layout. Like maybe with a small figure - one of your drawings to the side above a sidebar, with everything else right next to the sidebar. But we all have our own designing style. Something like on Kagirinai.com with a different color scheme. It’s doable.

I agree maybe you could try something different like not having the image as the header

Yeah, I kinda know the feeling. It’s so hard to find good images that really match with the theme of what the layout is or is going to be. I say keep trying, though, because I like designs with pretty graphics (eye candy!).

I know what you mean. I’m just not inspired by a lot of images these days… I’ve actually started moving more towards stock images because I can’t seem to work with other types of images anymore.
You could always make layouts out of those scenery pictures you take; there are a lot of really beautiful stock image layouts out there, and there are plenty of free, stock image websites as well.

Well, you know me, I always use my own images, I like to make things entirely by myself.
I wouldn’t agree older designers make imageless designs for that reason. It doesn’t have anything to do with accessibility, either. It’s the focus: they don’t want to have their layout take attention away from their work samples (or blog). With work samples that good, who needs an image-heavy layout anyway?
Then of course, you have flash designers like 2advanced.com who are so obsessed with making an impression, that their site seems impossible to browse. I never got to see their work portfolio because reaching it takes too much time. I’m not that patient.
If the scanned version of your drawing doesn’t look great, edit it digitally. Seriously, Photoshop is not just for blending images
Don’t be afraid to go digital, especially since you said you own a tablet, try it out. It can still have a traditional feel to it. Just add some semi-transparent color strokes, brushes etc.
I also agree with Stephanie, your layouts always have the same structure - wide header, and one or two columns. Break out of it, try different setups like for instance: Jelena’s “Precious”, my “Optimistic”, Aelyn’s “Poison”, your collaboration “Angelic Spirit”… they all use a small portion of image, and the rest is more or less abstract.

That’s exactly how I feel too! So eventually… all my recent designs have no images to work with. It’s sad really. I picture an image but I cannot find anything close to it on stock photography databases :/

amen to that. I always feel like I can’t find anything. you’re right I’m sure, the scope gets smaller =[
thanks skye dear =] and you’re definitely safe from evil kiera haha.

I’ve actually resorted to using photographs that I took in making layouts because I don’t feel like using images for my main domain.
Then I have this set to pick out of on my computer (since I never go out looking for images). I think it’s coming that way for my avatars though. Because I’ve made so many, and the ones I’ve used are the ones I like.
Good luck with finding images to use~ Maybe you can even draw things just to use for your layouts.
